Billy Searle's kicking set up three of the Tigers' four tries as Bristol, cut to 13 men by two quick yellow cards, had to settle for a losing bonus point.

Leicester Tigers are top of the Prem after a bonus-point 22-16 victory over Bristol Bears at Ashton Gate on Friday 30 October, a result that lifts them above Gloucester for now.

The stay at the top may be brief. The win came before the rest of the weekend's games, and Gloucester face Northampton on Saturday 31 October at 17:30 GMT (19:30 SAST) with a chance to reply.

Rees-Zammit strikes first

Bristol started well. Louis Rees-Zammit went over under the posts on his own in the sixth minute, his fifth Prem try of the season, and James Williams added the extras.

Leicester's answer came from Freddie Steward, who dived over in the corner in his 100th Prem start. The game then swung against the hosts in a short spell. Matias Moroni and Tom Jordan were sent to the sin bin for high tackles within three minutes of each other, leaving Bristol with 13 men.

Leicester made the most of it. Adam Radwan raced onto a kick that caught the Bristol defence out to score, and the visitors went into the break 12-7 up.

Searle's boot makes the difference

The kicking of fly-half Billy Searle shaped the night: three of Leicester's four tries came from his kicks.

Williams kept Bristol in touch with three second-half penalties, which along with his conversion made up all of their 16 points. The Bears came away with a single losing bonus point.

"Good, gritty win against a good team in a difficult place to come," said Leicester head coach Geoff Parling.

Bristol director of rugby Pat Lam said his side had believed they could win. "We generally believed that we could win this game but, ultimately, we couldn't apply enough pressure."

A Legends Night twist

The game was Bristol's Legends Night, and the hosts played in old-style shirts with letters on the back instead of numbers. Leicester had been asked to do the same, but league officials stepped in, so the Tigers wore numbers.
